Pale gray paws touched the ground lightly as Balthazar trotted through the trees. His paws were usually white, but there was so much dust in this dry place that the fur had been stained gray. Uncomfortably hot in his heavy coat, the husky's tongue lolled out of his mouth. His fur was slightly damp; a little earlier he had been swimming to escape the heat. He dried off too quickly, though, and was back to panting. Hot, dry air filled his mouth. This place smelled funny.
Looking up into the sky, Balthazar narrowed his eyes against the bright sunlight. Palm fronds silhouetted against the sky broke the light, but it still shone through enough to dazzle any dog. Blinking the light out of his eyes, he continued on. These strange trees seemed to go on for a very long way. He didn't see the use in them; they had no branches except on the very top, and their leaves had large gaps, not providing much shade. He had never seen them before, except in this strange place.
He had stumbled in quite by accident, actually. He had been wandering around a bit farther north when he had gotten bored. The dog snorted. Bored. He had been so bored that he had hidden on a train and let it take him where it pleased. It hadn't turned out so well. Most places were a least warm by this time of year, but here it was hot. And his heavy coat did not appreciate.
Balthazar resolved to get out of here as soon as possible.
He continued through the sparse shade for a while until he felt like resting. The heat sucked the energy out of the big dog. Picking one of the larger trees, he lay down underneath. The shade did little to block the sun, but it was something. Panting, he simply sat in the shriveling grass, observing the area without interest. There wasn't much to see that he hadn't seen at the beginning of this strange forest.

What kind of a dog with long fur would not be hot in this place? It was simply an oven and as of now Apolline felt like she was very well being baked. However, since this was her child-hood home she was much used to it already. She knew the ways to get cooled off. Sometimes humans would put their sprinklers on and just one run through would leave the femora feeling cooled off and refreshed. So there she walked, her coat moving in place as she took easy steps with her big paws. Her pink tongue lolled out of her mouth as she panted, eyes a bit squinted to protect them from the scorching sun above. This place was a forest of palms, and she did like this place alot. She came here often if she wanted to get just a bit of shade when she was hot. She had come here on that ocassion too, but she had no idea she would be meeting up with an entirely new dog.
He was a Husky, she could tell that easily. He was quite a large fellow by all means. He was resting under the comfort of the palms but he did not look very comfortable. He looked, hot but she couldn't blame him. She was too. This weather could get to you sometimes. She tried not to make herself too noticeable enough to distrube him. She just simply treaded forth quietly and slowly until she was a little ways away from the brute. "Hot, are you?" A smile crossed over her features as her tassle swished to and fro a few times to show him she was not a threat, simply a dog passing by to say hello.

The scent of a female hit his nose and Balthazar looked up, ears pricked. Another dog with long fur was watching him from the side. He hadn't scented her before because of the wind; it had been blowing his scent toward her. "Hot, are you?" she asked, tail swishing slightly to advertise her friendly intentions. The Husky eyed her for a moment. There wasn't any threat in her posture; her shoulders were sloped, not ridged, and her hackles were down. This surprised him slightly. Most other dogs he met were unfriendly and very territorial.
Balthazar nodded and flicked his ears in agreement. He didn't talk very much.
The female was a pale white color, a bit gray-brown from the dust of this season. Black spots darkened areas of her pelt, the most noticeable one over her eye. Though she was large, she had approached very quietly; she must be used to padding light.

It surprised her that he did not speak more. Most males she spoke to were overally chatty and sometimes even a bit annoying. She nodded with another quick smile, before looking down first at her paws. She let out a long sigh before resting herself onto her haunches. "I am Appoline, Gang Leader of Aspen." She introduced herself in a rather soft tone with a polite bow of the head as she looked up at him once again. "I do hope you won't mind If I join you for a bit?" She raised both of her eyebrows in question. She was a little bit worried what his reaction would be about the whole 'gang' idea. She didn't want him to think she was a vicious dog who led a whole bunch of blood thirsty demons. No, definietly not her. She didn't even have any gang members yet. The word gang held so much un-true meaning to it. When you hear the word you automatically think of a vicious group of mongrels, not a proud strong pack of dogs.

The female nodded, and introduced herself. "I am Appoline, Gang Leader of Aspen." Balthazar had been to many places. He had learned that in some cities, gangs had tremendous power, while in others, they were very weak. Some were bloodthirsty and cruel, some kind and sympathetic, and still others that were too weak to have any distinct label. Anyway, the title of leader meant something anywhere. It would probably be a bad idea to disrespect her.
"I do hope you wouldn't mind if I joined you for a bit?" she asked politely. Balthazar gave a sort of dog smile.
"I am called Balthazar," he said. His voice was deep and quiet, but it carried a long way. "I would be honored to keep company with you." Never hurt to be polite-- especially to a leader.

He was polite, that was a good thing definetly. However, knowing Apol she could get along with pretty much any kind of dog but the kind ones were easiest. He introduced himself as 'Balthazar' as politely as she did and told her that he would love to be honored her as company. She smiled, a bit more relaxed now as she sat. "Pleasure to meet you, Balthazar." A bee suddenly buzzed straight past her. She followed it with her fragile eyes until she made sure it was out of sight. How she hated bees. Their stung hurt, and alot. Her eyes returned to Balthazar and immediantly she knew what question she wanted to ask the brute. "Do you happen to be new to this area by any chance?" She questioned him rather randomly. But it was a good question to get some kind of a conversation brewing.

"Pleasure to meet you, Balthazar," said the female, padding up to Balthazar and sitting next to him. The Husky laid his head on his paws, observing-- what was her name? A...Apol? -- as she eyed a bee aprehensively. Balthazar didn't must care for insects of any kind. They made high-pitched buxxing noises when they flew, and couldn't make a good meal. The female turned to him, smiling, and asked, "Do you happen to be new to this area, by any chance?"
"Yes," he responded. Was it that obvious? he wondered. "I just arrived." It seemed a good moment to ask a question of his own, so he picked something he found himself slightly interested in. "How large is your pack?"

So he was new. It was not very obvious at all, she was just wondering. She had a curious mind like that. She nodded as he answered. Then he asked a totally different question. 'How large is your pack?' She froze, then thought with a chuckle. "Actually, not very large at all. I've only just started the formation of a gang so there are no members.." Her voice trailed off into nowhere with the hot breeze. "--Yet." Of course, she was intending to actually get members. Hopefully some would want to belong to her gang. She was pretty open when it came to new dogs. She had never been a leader of anything before but she thought that since it was new to her, it may be something fun and exciting. She didn't want to lead a boring life.

"Actually, not very large at all. I've only just started the formation of a gang so there are no members...yet." Balthazar nodded. He had seen gangs and packs from no members to ones with over fifty, but he had never actually seen the stage in between, where the packs grew. It would be interesting to observe, he realized. Though he wasn't exactly a pack dog himself, he found himself liking this Apolline. While he had seen starter packs at two, he had never seen a pack begin at one member. Though it must happen, she had her work cut out for her.
"If you need it, I could help." The words came out of his mouth before he could actually think about it, which was unusual for Balthazar. However, he didn't regret it; one dog working alone would have trouble starting a pack.
Besides: he had nothing better to do.

So he wanted to help her out? She grinned, she couldn't help it. His help would do greatly for her, and quite honestly she was a bit desperate for members. The number of dogs seemed to be growing around the area so maybe her luck would turn out better than she thought. But then, it came to her. Was he asking to join or just help her out? She pondered, until finally asking. Oh how stupid she felt. "That would be wonderful." She beamed with light eyes. "But one thing-are you asking to join or simply help. The two are a bit different." She smiled. Her voice wasn't serious. It never seemed to be. She was a dog with multiple personalites, but she was never cruel nor boring or careless.

Appoline's happiness was a bit catching, and Balthazar's tail waved slightly. The emotions of others usually didn't effect him, but this female must have that effect on every dog. "That would be wonderful," she said, giving a doggy smile. "But, one thing-- are you asking to join, or simply help? The two are a bit different." The was a prudent question. Balthazar thought for a moment. This was his last chance to back out.
"I will join, I suppose," he said, flicking an ear in a sort of assurance. He had thought earlier that he would leave this devilishly hot place, but he found he would rather do this.

She enjoyed the company of him, he was a good dog to be around and helpful at that. She couldn't of been happier when he told her he would join her gang. He would be the first member. She smiled, her bright eyes shimmering. "That's great. You have my thanks, Balthazar." She said as friendly as she possibly could. "The name of the Gang is Aspen, I thought I might let you know." She added with another swish of the tail. She felt maybe she could befriend this male if she already hadn't. She seemed to get along with him just fine already. She still felt like she needed to know more about him if he was going to belong to her gang, though. But the time for that would come sooner or later.

He was at a loss for what to say next, though it didn't really bother him; he didn't talk much, anyway. This was a surprisingly long conversation. Sitting up, he looked off into the palms. A motion in his belly reminded him of something else he could say. He turned, brilliant blue eyes blinking at Apolline.
"Do you know where I can get food here?" He generally found things in trash cans and caught the occasional rat. Some cities had more decent trash deposits than others; maybe there was a specific place he could go.

His question was an easy one, and It was nice that she didn't really have to think about it at all. Sure, there were places to find food all over the place around their part of town. Apolline had done it many times. It was incredibly too easy just to sneak down to the dumpsters behind the restaurants and grab a whole meal to eat. But you did have to be careful. It had never happened to her before, but Apolline had heard of dogs getting caught and snatched up by the animal control van, never to be seen again. She certainly did not want that happening. In response to his question, she nodded rather quickly. "Mmm hmm." She began. "There are places everywhere. I usually go down to the old Italian Place in town. Behind it are dumpsters, leftovers that humans never finnish. It's a perfect meal. There's enough to last you for weeks." She smiled to him. If he was looking for food, she would of course be delighted to go with him and help him out a bit. The more company the better.

The female described a human food place that, like many others, tossed many meal's worth out the back, never to be touched by humans. Yet they always seemed to get angry when any dog tried to take it. To Balthazar, it didn't make very much sense. But humans were strange creatures.
He had had enough of resting by that time, so he stood, shaking his long fur as if trying to get the heat out. The palm trees extended for some time. He turned his head to Apolline and said, "Would you lead me to this place?" He was pretty hungry. It had been some hours since he had eaten last, and that meal of half a dead rat could hardly be considered filling.
